Cunningham to Endorse Specter

by: John Morgan

Thu Jan 21, 2010 at 11:25:37 AM EST

Arlen Specter, who is ducking debates in his Democratic primary race against Congressman Joe Sestak will be endorsed Monday by Lehigh County Executive Don Cunningham.  Cunningham announced the move this morning on Democratic Talk Radio.

Specter and Sestak were due to debate each other at next week's Pennsylvania Progressive Summit.  Specter seemingly disengaged though, perhaps in part from pressure from the Pennsylvania Democratic Party.  A Caucus Chair shared deep indignation at the idea of the state's progressives having a debate which would be televised a week before the State Committee meeting.  I'm always amazed at how small minded Democratic Party officials can be.  Maybe they should be more concerned with why progressives are leaving the Party and/or not voting for Democratic candidates.  This is certainly one reason.  Conservatives dominate the PA Democratic Party and they meet three times a year.  Now they have their ears bent out of shape because progressives are meeting.

Specter and Sestak will both be at Summit (0.00 / 0)
John:

Just to set the record straight, Sen. Specter and Rep. Sestak will both be at the Summit next Saturday.

But his point was ... (0.00 / 0)
is the debate between the two still going to be held?

no (0.00 / 0)
It is a forum.  They will take the same questions but will NOT be on the stage at the same time.  No debate.

Brad Koplinski contacted me about this.  I explained that it was originally touted as a debate then disappeared from the agenda, then changed to a "forum."  What happened Mike?

Pehaps the real question is: what happened Arlen? (0.00 / 0)
Two to one that Specter, or his campaign, nixed the idea of a debate in some way or another. I expect it to be a hostile (though not Tea Party hostile) audience for Specter.

I understand his reluctance to debate (0.00 / 0)
Joe Sestak would tear him to shreds over his 30 year record of voting for Republican policies and supporting and campaigning for Republican candidates.  I wouldn't want to be Arlen Specter and have to defend that record.  Doing so in front of several hundred hard core progressives makes that even worse.

I'm mystified at all these Democratic officials endorsing Specter.  They must all have been smitten with amnesia.  Checking a box on a government form isn't what makes someone a Democrat.

Got a hunch... (0.00 / 0)
...and maybe you could say I'm nipping at the Reading Water too much, but I think the reason that so many Democratic committee people at the local and state levels and party people in general in PA are behind Specter is because if you could check their votes cast, in general elections, when Specter ran, you'd find more than most of them have voted for him in the past or recent memory and yet some of these same Democratic officials bitch like mad when people put Republican yard signs in their lawns or endorse other party candidates for office.

Yet, I guess when it comes to being able to be sneaky about who one really supports, if you simply let it come to your vote and not officially endorse anyone, then apparently it is allowed in an unspoken manner, since the party can't really tell you that must vote for the Democrat in the polling place.

It is this sneaky and corrupt behavior that has hamstrung the party for years because none of these people are anywhere near a real Democrat in a true party sense.  They are at best independents masquerading as Democrats, at worst, Republi-crats.  What is worse, they continue to have a stranglehold on the damn party much to the detriment of those in the party who really want honest Democrats, and much to the detriment of ever realizing their agenda.  Then again, I have to wonder what the hell their agenda is, with this sort of half-baked nonsense.

The biggest problem is, that Democratic party people in the state, have the defense of plausible deniability to hide from the truth of their votes, but now that he's switched parties, I think we have a clearer understanding of what's been going on all along folks!  It took Specter switching parties to save his hash or attempt to do so, to make the real worms come out of the wood pile.

Again, it is yet another fabulous reason why I left the party and parties altogether.  I want to be an honest voter, an honest and true politically minded person whether you like my positions or hate them or could care less.
