News & Notes February 20, 2010

Former General Alexander Haig died this morning.  He is no longer in charge.

Hate radio and the anti-government hysteria claimed another life this week.  Another dedicated public servant was killed by the rage incited by the likes of Rush, Bill O'Reilly, Beck, Coulter, Hannity and others.

I had a wasted morning.  The part to fix my car didn't come in so it didn't get repaired.  Then I drove to Quakertown for a candidate's announcement.  No pictures, no usable video, no press kit, not even any candidate info or head shot in a press release.  A waste of time and gas.

Steve Welch has finally withdrawn as a challenger to Jim Gerlach in the 6th CD.  He didn't even live in the district...

It appears some Democrats are trying to smear Joe Sestak for honestly answering a legitimate question.  If the Congressman really wanted to bury the Party establishment he'd reveal all the details of the spurious offer made to him in a blatant attempt to buy him off.  The scenario is standard operating procedure for politics so why wouldn't we believe it happened?  It's happened too often and in too many races to not be credible.

Arlen Specter has now signed on to Sen. Bennet's letter about restoring the public option.  Now how about Sen. Casey?  Sen. Reid says he is giving the request serious consideration.

A new Facebook group called The Coffee Party now has over 6200 members.  At least we'll be more alert than those teabaggers.

Arlen Specter continues to duck debates with Congressman Sestak.  The latest is an offer to discuss the issues together on Meet the Press.  The Florida Republican candidates aren't afraid to appear together and educate voters on their qualifications.

Lower Merion students appear to have been spied upon so much they spoke freely about using Post It notes to block the webcams when the green light came on.  The FBI is now investigating.

There were lots of meetings and events today.  Sorry I couldn't make them all.

Update:  I'll do updates as information flows in from this morning's other events.  The three county committee meetings I couldn't get to were all intense, important and news worthy.  In Chester County Manan Trivedi received over 70% of the vote for the Democratic endorsement for the 6th Congressional District.  Congratulations Manny.

In Berks County I hear Sheila Dow-Ford got a hearty welcome as she challenges Congressman Tim Holden.  Congratulations Sheila.  I also hear the infamous cad John Ryan tried, once again, to subvert and destroy his County Committee with all of his shenanigans.  It's time for Mr. Ryan to slink away and crawl back into his hole.

I have yet to get news from Lancaster County, when I do I'll post an update.

I was at the Lancaster meeting (0.00 / 0)
Joe Hoeffel won the Governors race endorsement, Joe Sestak overwhelmingly won the U.S. Senate endorsement and there was no endorsement for Lt. Gov. Neither candidate got the 65 votes needed, but Smith-Ribner had more votes than Saidel. I believe it was 62 - 57 or thereabouts.
Arlen Specter wasn't there. A local Congressman spoke for him. Joe Sestak was there as were Jack Wagner, Dan Onoroto and Joe Hoeffel. Both Saidel and Smith-Ribner were there.
I was at the Berks meeting and the Greater Reading Pac meeting tonight and Sheila Dow-Ford was terrific at both!
Oh and Mr. Ryan made a lot of enemies today.

Sestak candidacy accomplishment (0.00 / 0)
I've heard lots of manufactured anguish from Specter supporters claiming that Sestak's candidacy is draining limited Democratic funds in a contested primary; and that Sestak has no chance to win and merely is creating divisions within the party which may not heal by the general election, thus making the election of Pat Toomey more likely. I believe those are anti-democratic scare tactics designed to mask the fact that Specter doesn't have a progressive record upon which to base his own candidacy.

Inarguable, however, is the fact that these assertions by the Specter camp are mere speculation. On the other hand, the candidacy of Joe Sestak already has had at least one very real and positive accmplishment. But for Sestak's challenge to Specter, there is no way Specter would have signed on to use the reconciliation process to pass a public option healthcare insurance reform bill. To the contrary, Specter would be tacking to the right to position himself for a general elction run against Toomey.

Specter has demonstrated that his principles are determined by whatever it is that enhances his chances for re-election, such as becoming a Democrat less than one year ago. Chalk up a victory for Sestak, win or lose the primary. If we get a public option bill, Sestak may be as responsible as anyone for that success.

Democrats are not democrats (0.00 / 0)
and we see this over and over.  Any qualified candidate can run for office.  I'm fed up with watching Democrats subverting democracy.
