We Need Accountability for Inciting to Riot

by: John Morgan

Mon Mar 29, 2010 at 10:25:51 AM EDT

The politics of hatred are getting out of hand.  The right wing noise machine is overheated with calls for violence and now that idiots are heeding those calls the perpetrators are scurrying back into their holes to avoid accountability.  Glenn Beck and his ilk are responsible for this and Sarah Palin leads the way.  As bricks get tossed through windows, Members of Congress and their families threatened and liberals who dare attend Tea Party events roughed up we must hold accountable everyone responsible for such hate speech.  Not all speech is free and not all speech is protected.  When one calls for violence, when one irresponsibly says someone else is African, not eligible to be President, someone is going to come and remove your guns, etc. the resulting violence has real human costs.  The Becks, Palins, Rushes and Michael Savages of the media must be arrested and prosecuted as accomplices to the violence.

Blogger Mike Vanderboegh called for people to throw bricks through the windows of Democratic Party offices and, as surely as night follows day, some morons did so.  The militiaman from Alabama should be arrested for each one of the incidents which followed.  He should be prosecuted and made to pay for repairs for every office so vandalized.  This isn't yet another Kristallnacht it surely could turn into one if authorities don't do the responsible thing and hold people accountable for the results of their words.

More evidence of continued... (0.00 / 0)
...efforts by people in the religious & social counterculture communities to bring about change by deadly force & domestic terror if necessary.  People think I'm nuts for saying that any group can become just like the Taliban, regardless of faith and to remove their bias as it being a solely Muslim-flaovred type of invention or nuance.  It is NOT!  Fail to heed my wisdom at your own peril, but this story should help open your eyes to the kinds of stuff that lurks right here in good ole USofA.

Feds: Militia members sought to spark uprising

Most people know of the prevalence of hate groups in PA to this day, what's to say the next group that's rooted out or uncovered isn't from our state.  Or worse still, what of it when, circumstances forbid, one of these crack-pot groups succeeds in a plot to wreck havoc & mayhem in the name of "saving us" from some envisioned enemy.

As a person who works in the mental health and human service field, I must wonder how many of these people may have legitimate psychotic disorders. Yet, I'm sure I'd get more than a few snide comments, if I suggested that we need tougher regulation of firearms & that while the 2nd amendment is a good thing, it has become a vehicle for these groups to thrive & flourish.  Of course at the same time, it also affords those of us who want to protect ourselves from these hooligans the right to keep & bear arms, ah the double-edged sword of creation.

Violence (0.00 / 1)
Agreed, like the kooky left winger who was arrested for threatening to kill Eric Cantor.  Because he was Jewish, no doubt.  Anti-semitics are growing in number in this country and throughout the world.  Like John says, put all those dissidents in jail.  Where have we heard this before?  Cuba, Venezuala? China? Russia? Nazi Germany? Brown shirts anyone?

No, there's a difference... (0.00 / 0)
...between the nutties & dissidents, in my mind.  We need dissidents to keep things interesting & honest or at least give rise to continued discussion between the stable and fluid endpoints of life.

Yet, we also underestimate, when we wax poetic or rambling, rave, and moan about issues in a public way, the unfortunate and sometimes caustic & unstable effect it has on people who truly do probably need some type of mental health care.  While I deal with or know of scores of profoundly mentally ill persons, who are diagnosed, in treatment, at various stages of recovery or on the road to recovery, there are literally countless scores of people all over in our nation that by the nature of their disorder may not ever get diagnosed, until they do something really off the wall or extreme and end up hurting themselves or another or at least causing a significant scene or disruption perhaps.  What is more, owing to the overriding principles of freedom, liberty, and equality, we no longer force people to undergo treatment or medication regimens to help keep them stable, if they don't want to, up to a point, of course.  I don't propose changing that, but we need to be more honest & realistic about the wellness of our fellow Americans and I had hoped, when the whole healthcare debate and discussion got going that somehow, someone might have kept that notion alive in the discussion, but instead it boiled back down to the love or lack of money.  Yes, money is important in the discussion, but what you really aim to do with those resources when it comes to healthcare, mentally or physically is where the rubber meets the road or it doesn't.

Still, getting back to the topic point, I think, keeping in mind what I've said here, people do need to exercise a bit more mindfulness when engaging their mouths, keyboards, or pens and on the whole work towards keeping it more about the situation and the facts and implications, directly and less about the wild, fantastical, and sensationalized juicy factor for spin and popularity sake.  Otherwise, sooner or later, we'll have nothing left to spin or sensationalize, because we'll just be plain screwed all around.

But at the same time... (0.00 / 0)
...in the larger continuum of life, in a spectrum perspective of things, those who start out as dissidents can "evolve" or shift into violent nutties, but I wonder how many of them ever come back from the violent end of things, if they don't self-destruct or get caught doing something dumb in the meantime.

How is this similar? (0.00 / 0)
No one incited this man.  It isn't similar at all.  How many more asinine comments can you post?  Are you trying for some sort of record?

The same Eric Cantor, who, of course (0.00 / 0)
falsely claimed someone shot up his office.  Turns out the office was nowhere in the building near the window which got pierced because some idiot shot a gun in the air up to half a mile away.

Anyone who threatens a Member of Congress deserves to be prosecuted.  My point, since you missed it, is that those who encourage, incite and encourage such violence should also be prosecuted.  It's a shame you're unable to comprehend even short articles.
