Jim Gerlach Benefited From Illegal White House Politicization at Taxpayer Expense

by: John Morgan

Wed Oct 22, 2008 at 15:43:20 PM EDT

A report last week got lost in the ton of information about the election.  The Bush Administration was caught using Cabinet members and other high government officials to campaign for partisan political campaigns at taxpayer expense.  These were violations of the Hatch Act.

Jim Gerlach (PA-06) benefited from taxpayer paid campaign visits from:

Commerce Secretary Gutierrez in Exton on March 10, 2006

Commerce Secretary Gutierrez in Malvern on May 15, 2006

EPA Administrator Johnson in Pottstown on September 18, 2006

HUD Secretary Jackson in Reading on October 2, 2006

"Congressman Gerlach has some explaining to do to the people of the 6th district," said Jeff Garis, Executive Director of Penn Action. "Using tax dollars for campaign purposes is clearly unethical. We're calling on Representative Gerlach to reimburse Pennsylvanians the public funds that the Bush White House spent on his campaign."

This is public corruption, pure and simple.  Congressman Gerlach routinely lies about his opponents while using taxpayer paid political junkets by Bush Administration officials to campaign for him.

Not to burst the bubble but... (0.00 / 0)
...if those people who are cabinet appointees and members of the Senior Executive Service or other Purple Book appointments, then I do not believe they are covered under the Hatch Act rules against the very things you've pointed out.

Cabinet members are really the President's representative for that particular area of the executive branch of government.  It would be as if the President were campaigning on behalf of the candidate.  Other high level officials may be close to infringing upon things, but it is a gray area.

Now, if they were on official business in the area to conduct the duties of their office while appearing for the representative, and they sought and got reimbursement for official travel and such, then I'd call that definitely corruption, Hatch Act or not.

I don't disagree about Gerlach's constant lies and McCain-like shamelessness, which even in his more arrogant moments of victory he's been known to let show for those paying attention.  The balance of his district in Berks, especially seems to me to be a big joke to Gerlach and a county full of people who buy his tripe and get taken for a ride at the same time.  So he gets to laugh his butt off while making decisions that clearly do not represent this area very well to put it mildly.

I had a pollster ask me about who I'd vote for between Gerlach and Roggio after being told some things about Roggio that were somewhat less than flattering, if they were true.  I told her point blank, if this race were between Rex The Wonder Dog and Gerlach, Rex gets my vote, even if he be another republican, as long as it would be a different republican at this point.

I'm not sure who needs to go more, Sam Rohrer or Jim Gerlach and like clock-work the Berks County Chamber of Business and Industry that obviously doesn't care about local business, went and endorsed both of them for the election coming up.  Talk about selling out the membership and for what?!  damn near nothing I tell ya.
